Birmingham Central Business District Bridge Replacement – Birmingham, AL
This project included replacement of the I-59/I-20 bridges, approaches on I-59/20 from the I-65 interchange to north of 31st Street North Interchange and is the largest project in Alabama DOT history. Scope of work included replacement of the I-59/I-20 bridges, approaches on I-59/20 from the I-65 interchange to north of the 31st Street North Interchange, redesign of the route interchange with I-59/20 and Red Mountain Expressway, and the demolition and rebuilding of bridges. Usage was approximately 160,000 vehicles per day which is twice the design capacity, requiring the replacement and upgrade of the viaduct. Southland Holdings’ subsidiary Johnson Brothers Corporation contracted Sauls seismic to perform preconstruction inspections and vibration monitoring on this project, including the monitoring of 25 different seismograph locations over the course of the project. The Sauls Seismic NOW Access℠ website was utilized throughout the project to notify project management of vibration alerts. A combination text/email alert system was set up to send notifications for both alert and action levels of vibration.
